New Breed of Airport Dogs Offer Airport Therapy!

THE BREGMAN VETERINARY GROUP

www.BregmanVetGroup.com

There's a new breed of airport dogs.  They aren't sniffing around for drugs or bombs, but they are looking for people who need a hug or a paw to shake!

Several airports across the nation, including Los Angeles International Airport and Miami International Airport have put together Free Airport Dog Therapy Programs.

"His job is to be touched," volunteer Kyra Hubis said about Henry James, her 5-year-old golden retriever that works a few hours a week at the San Jose Airport. "I am just standing there with him.  They are talking to him.  If I need to answer for him, I do.  But I am at the end of his leash, he's not at the end of mine."

The dogs are intended to take the stress out of travel -- the crowds, long lines and terrorism concerns.

"You can literally feel the stress levels drop, people start smiling, strangers starts talking to each other and everybody walks away feeling really, really good," said Heidi Huebner, director of volunteers at LAX.

10 Raccoon's Tested Positive for Rabies in Staten Island!

THE BREGMAN VETERINARY GROUP
www.BregmanVetGroup.com

Attention Pet Owners, 10 raccoons tested positive for rabies in Staten Island!

Since January 2013, 10 raccoon's have tested positive in Staten Island in neighborhoods including Eltingville, Grasmere, Great Kills, New Dorp, Park Hill, Tottenville and Westerleigh. The number is on the rise, as compared to last year, when a reported 6 raccoon's tested positive in Staten Island.

Maintaining vaccination against rabies is required for all dogs and cats in NYC. Any unvaccinated dog or cat that may have been exposed to a rabid animal is required to enter into six-month isolation in an approved facility or be euthanized. If a pet is up to date with its rabies vaccine but potentially exposed to a rabid animal, a booster vaccine should be given immediately, and the owner should be instructed to confine and observe the animal for 45 days in the owner's home.
Although none of the ten rabid raccoon's have any reported contact with any humans or pets, it's still important to be aware of any rabid animals in your neighborhood.

Any healthy pet dog or cat that has been bitten or scratched a person is required to be confined and observed by the owner (in most instances) for 10 days. If the animal is not currently vaccinated against rabies, vaccination should not occur until after the completion of the 10 day observation period. Animal bites are can be reported to the DOHMH Veterinary Public Health Services (VPHS) Animal Bite Unit at 212-676-2483 during business hours; outside of business hours please call the Poison Control Center at 212-POISONS or 212-764-7667.

A couple of things that pet owners should be educated on:
  • Avoid contact with wild and stray animals
  • Make sure your dog or cat is up-to-date on its rabies vaccinations
  • Avoid leaving your pets outdoors unattended and feed them indoors
  • Avoid trying to separate animals that are fighting
  • Contact the Bregman Vet Group if your pet has been in contact with a raccoon, skunk, bat or any animal that might be rabid
If your pet is not vaccinated, please contact one of the Bregman Veterinary Group locations immediately to schedule an appointment.

THE BREGMAN VETERINARY GROUP
www.BregmanVetGroup.com

Nakio, a mixed-breed dog is becoming famous rather quickly for becoming the first canine to receive four artificial limbs! Nakio was rescued as a puppy from an abandoned home in Nebraska during the winter.

He was found in terrible conditions which included being frozen in a puddle in the home of the basement. He was malnourished and was experiencing frostbite. When found, veterinarians worked extremely hard to nurse Nakio back to health. However, he lost all four of his paws, the tip of his tail and a piece of his nose to frostbite.

Nakio is being referred to as the “bionic dog” and gets around using his prosthetic paws extremely well!  To continue reading about Nakio and his amazing story, CLICK HERE!

May is National Pet Month! How Will You Celebrate?

THE BREGMAN VETERINARY GROUP
www.BregmanVetGroup.com

Did you know May is National Pet Month? National Pet Month is a great time to celebrate your current pets, and spread the word about encouraging pet ownership to your friends and family!

If you’re looking to celebrate National Pet Month, there are plenty of ways you can do so!

Here are a few options to celebrate and help spread the word! Let us know if you have any other ideas on our Facebook page!

Adopt an Animal – The best way to participate in National Pet Month is to bring a new pet home to your house! Whether you choose to adopt a cat or dog, you’ll be giving your pet a new home and a great life full of love from their new owner.

Foster an Animal – Not everyone can commit to being a full time pet owner. If you think you could spare some room in your home for a pet for a little bit of time, fostering a pet may be an option for you. You could really be helping to save an animal’s life without the full commitment!

Help Out at Your Local Shelter – Volunteering at a local pet shelter is a great way to give back and recognize National Pet Month! Not everyone can commit to owning and taking care of a pet daily. So, if you’re a pet lover but can’t make the commitment, volunteer this month and spend some time with the animals at your local shelter!

Collect for a Charity – If you don’t have the time in your busy schedule to volunteer, find a pet charity that means a lot to you and collect a few bucks this month to donate to the charity! This is a great way to help a good cause and celebrate National Pet Month.
