Is Your Pet Safe From Rabies?

On a Delta flight from Wisconsin to Atlanta, an extra, unwanted passenger boarded the plane - a bat. No one knows if this winged creature was carrying rabies because it escaped after the emergency landing back in Madison, Wisconsin; but all the passengers were at close risk for coming into contact with the deadly disease (The Washington Post).

Rabies, a viral disease transmitted most often through the bite of a wild animal, infects the central nervous system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death in humans. According to the article on The Washington Post website “Winged intruder on morning jet prompts rabies concernand belated search for the passengers”, “Bats are the primary source of rabies deaths in the US…  thousands of people get shots to prevent rabies after exposure to cats, dogs and other rabid animals.” Is your pet safe?

Unvaccinated dogs and cats exposed to a rabid animal should be euthanized immediately, or placed in strict isolation for 6 months and vaccinated 1 month before being released, according to the CDC. To avoid this and keep your beloved animal out of harm, stay up to date with your pet’s vaccinations.
