Mosquito-borne virus risk is on the rise!
The risk of being infected with West Nile virus is now high in the New Bedford area according to the state Department of Public Health. In addition, mosquitoes infected with Eastern equine encephalitis virus have been detected in Dighton, “increasing the risk of infections in that town and the surrounding areas,” (Boston Article).
Historically, this is peak season for human infection of West Nile and Eastern equine encephalitis. Therefore, it is no surprise that there are increasing numbers of mosquitoes carrying West Nile and Eastern equine encephalitis found in Southern Bristol County (Boston Article).
Hurricane Irene was no help for this high risk period of West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis. The excessive standing water left by the rains is perfect breeding grounds for mosquito eggs.
Keep you and your pet safe from these deadly viruses. Wear protective clothing and insect repellent with DEET during peak hours of dusk to dawn. Don’t let water stand still for too long. Drain excess water left behind from rain and make sure screens in windows and doors fit tight to help keep mosquitoes out of your home and away from you and your pet.
