Understanding the Noises Your Cat Makes

Do you ever wonder what your cat is trying to tell you?  Cats have about 100 vocalizations that they can mix and match to communicate with us.  Since most pet owners aren't as good at observing body language (subtle movements and twitches), here are a few tips to help you understand the noises your cat is using to communicate with you.

Understanding Sounds:

• Meowing - Kittens are more likely to meow than adult cats.  While adult cats rarely meow at each other, they may meow at you to get your attention.
• Purring - Cats usually purr when they are content or comforting themselves when they are sick or injured.
• Trilling - This sound is somewhere between a meow and a purr.  It's used as a friendly greeting!
• Growling - As you might expect, growling is a warning sign.  If you cat is growling at another cat, they are trying to say that they want the other cat to back off.
• Yowling - Female cats in heat may make a noise that sounds like a desperate cry.  This noise is to attract other cats.  Don't forget to have your cats spayed and neutered!
