Black cats have long been an object of superstition -- especially around Halloween.  Some people consider black cats to be a symbol of bad luck, often associated with witchcraft.  

However, cat owners know this isn't true!  Black cats can be unique and elegant in appearance.  They're a great addition to any family.  On National Black Cat Day, we remind pet owners to pay a little extra attention to their feline friends and celebrate just how beautiful they are!

History of Black Cat Superstitions:
The folklore behind black cats varies from culture to culture.  However, in Western history, black cats have been looked upon as a symbol of evil omens.  They are often associated with witchcraft and sorcery.  

Dating back to the Pilgrims in Plymouth colony, it became a practice to rid the colony of black cats in an effort to protect the home.  They thought that black cats could change into human shape.   People include black cats as a symbol of Halloween in an effort to add a frightful aspect to their decor.

How to celebrate National Black Cat Day!

• Make Your Cat Feel Special - If you already have a cat (especially a black cat), make sure they get some extra love today.  Buy your cat a new toy or a treat after spending an afternoon playing with them.
• Adopt a Cat - If you have been thinking about getting a cat and your family is ready for a new addition, it might be a good time to consider welcoming a new feline into your life.  Black cats are often overlooked in shelters and aren't adopted as frequently as other cat breeds.
• Make a Donation - If you can't adopt or own a cat, consider making a small donation to a local animal shelter.  Local shelters play a big role in helping keep cats off of the streets and placing them with a family.

Raccoon Confirmed with Canine Distemper Virus in Highland Park Area

A raccoon near Highland Park in Brooklyn tested positive for canine distemper virus (CDV).  This is the second raccoon this year to test positive for the disease.

Canine distemper virus is a paramyxovirus that is related to human measles.  While it is not a threat to humans, it can affects dogs and other canines, as well as ferrets, minks and skunks.

Signs of canine distemper virus:

Fever

Anorexia

Fatigue

Upper Respiratory Illness

Oculonasal Discharge

Lower Respiratory Illness

Vomiting

Watery/Bloody Diarrhea

What does this mean for pet owners?

Dog owners should make sure that their pets are are vaccinated.  Especially young puppies and older dogs that are more susceptible to the disease.

Healthy Pumpkin Treats for Your Dog

Fall is the season for pumpkin everything.  Why not let your pet indulge with you?  Pumpkin can actually be included as a healthy part of your pet's diet in moderation.  Here are a two variations on how to make homemade pumpkin treats for your pup.

Pumpkin Treats:

Peanut Butter & Pumpkin Treats

Ingredients: 
2 1/2 cups of Whole Wheat Flour
2 Eggs
1/2 Cup Canned Pumpkin
2 Tablespoons of Peanut Butter
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
1/2 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
2. Whisk together ingredients and add water as needed to help make the dough a workable consistency. However, the dough should remain dry and stiff.  Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll.  Cut into 1/2 inch pieces.
3. Bake for 40 minutes.

Pumpkin Harvest Bones

Ingredients:
2 Eggs
1/2 Cup Canned Pumpkin
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
2 Tablespoons Dry Milk
2 1/2 Cups of Flour (preferably Wheat)
Water

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Blend ingredients together and add water as needed to make the dough workable.  Keep the dough dry and stiff.  
3. Roll into 1/2 inch thick roll and cut into bone shapes.
4. Place 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
5. Bake for 20 minutes on one side, then turn over and bake another 20 minutes.

Happy First Day of Fall!

It's the first day of Fall!  Are you excited for crisp, cool air, sweaters, and long walks at the park with your pup?  As we adjust to the new season, here are a few tips to keep your pets healthy and safe.

Fall Pet Care Tips:

• Add Pumpkin to Your Pup's Diet - Pumpkin flavors can be included in your dog's diet too!  Canned pumpkin has soluble fibers that can help with digestive issues.  Try mixing 1-2 teaspoons of canned pumpkin into your dog's food as a healthy Fall treat. 
• Stay Active - Now that the weather is cooling down, walks at the dog park seem a little less intimidating!  Take advantage of the beautiful fall weather and take your dog out for a walk or to play Frisbee at the park.
• Be Conscious of Allergies - Did you know that pet's can suffer from seasonal allergies too?  If you notice your pet itching more than usual, you may want to schedule a veterinary visit to rule out possible allergens.  Leaves, pollen and grasses can irritate your pet, if they suffer from allergies.
• Manage Pet Hair - Many pets start to shed their summer coats during the fall to make room for a thicker, winter coat.  Remember to brush your pet often to help catch hair before it ends up on your couch and clothes!
• Stay Hydrated - Although the temperature may be dropping, it's still important to remember that your pet is hydrated.  if your pet spends a lot of time outdoors, make sure that they have access to clean water!
• Keep Warm - Fall is known for chilly nights.  If your pet spends time outdoors or even primarily lives outside, make sure that they have a warm place to go at night.

• Take the Time to Spay or Neuter Your Pet - One of the best ways to conserve resources and protect the environment is by spaying or neutering your pet.  Not only does this prevent unwanted liters, it also helps keep your pet safe and healthy!  Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives by reducing their risk of cancer and prostate disease.
• Use Natural Soaps at Bath Time -Use all-natural shampoos when cleaning your pet.  Chemical-free cleaning products better for the environment and they are also gentle on your pet's skin.
• Buy Pet Toys Made from Natural or Recycled Materials - Buy sustainable toys for your furry friends.  There are many toys made from natural materials.  You can even get pet beds made with organic cotton or recycled plastic.
• Have Fun with DIY - Add organic catnip or cat grass to your spring garden this year.  This is a great way to green your home and keep your cat happy!  You can also get crafty with scrap yarn and fabrics to make your own pet toys.

Pet-Friendly Easter Egg Hunts!

Want to include your pet in your Easter weekend plans?  Here are a few tips to help you organize a special pet-friendly Easter egg hunt!

Easter Egg Hunt Tips:

• Hide Treats in Dog-Friendly Toys - Plastic Easter eggs can crack in your dog's mouth if they chomp on them to get a treat.  Place any treats inside dog-friendly toys.  Some are designed with holes specifically for treats!
• Limit Treats - Keep an eye on how many treats your pet eats throughout the day.  Limit your pet - you don't want them eating too much food, too fast.  This can cause an upset stomach.  
• Know How Much You Put Out - Count the treats so that you know that they have all been found by the end of the day.  Leaving a treat outside can attracted unwanted critters.

Remember - Many traditional Easter goodies are dangerous to your pet.  Keep chocolate, lilies, and other pet poisons well out of reach.  Read more about how to plan the perfect egg hunt here.

How to Habituate Your Cat to a Carrier

Does your cat need to take a trip to the vet?  It can take time for your cat to adjust to a carrier.  Here are a few tips to help make your cat’s trip to the vet as comfortable as possible.

Cat Carrier Tips:

• Introduction – Let your cat become used to the carrier.  This will help him or her become comfortable with the idea of taking a trip.
• Customization – Add your cat’s favorite toys and treats to the carrier.  Stuffed mice, catnip toys, feather toys, and cat grass can help your cat feel relaxed.
• Trust – Don’t lure your cat into the carrier and close it.  Make sure that they trust you and feel calm.
• Patience – It may take several months before your cat feel completely comfortable inside of their carrier.
