5 Exercising Tips to Prevent Obesity This Winter

Exercise is an important part of preventative health care, but cold weather can make it hard to stick to your routines.

Luckily, there are ways for you and your pets to stay healthy even when you don't want to go outside.  These winter exercise ideas will help prevent pet obesity and leave your pets happy and healthy.

Cold Weather Exercises:

  • Fetch - Both dogs and cats like playing fetch!  Use different types of toys to keep them interested.
  • Hide and Seek - Hide a low-calorie treat around the house.  This is a great way to provide cats with mental stimulation and motivation.
  • Walks - We know it's cold outside, but if you bundle up and take precautions, a brisk walk can be healthy for your pet.  Consider booties to protect your dog's feet and wipe them down when you get back inside to prevent them from licking anything poisonous they may have stepped in when they were outside.
  • Feather on a Stick - Cats love the thrill of hunting.  The feather on a stick is a great way to get them up and moving.
  • Laser Pointer - This is a simple way to provide your pets with exercise and entertainment indoors.  Both cats and dogs love chasing around the laser pointer light.

Keeping Your Pets Fit

It is important to promote positive lifestyle for your pet.  Cats and dogs are both prone to becoming overweight without exercise and a healthy diet.  Here are a few tips to help you improve your pet’s fitness and avoid obesity.

Pet Health Tips:
  • Spend Time Outdoors – Now that the weather is warm, you can take your pets for a walk or let them play outside.  Running, jumping and chasing are natural ways to get your dog energized.  There are plenty of outdoor enclosures available that allow cats to run, roam, and pounce outside too!
  • Consistent Exercise – A moderate level of exercise each day is ideal for a fit and healthy pet.  Keep toys handy to keep your dog or cat energized for a play session, whether indoors or outdoors.
  • Portion Control – Feed your pet using a designated measuring cup.  This is a great way to make sure you know exactly how much food they are consuming each day.  This can keep you from over feeding your pet, especially as your pet ages.
If you are concerned about your pet’s fitness and nutrition, we encourage you to contact our office.  The experienced veterinarians at Bregman Vet Group can provide you with advice for your pet’s individual needs.
