The Importance of Wellness Exams!

Scheduling regular wellness exams for your pet is vital towards their overall well-being. Wellness exams allow veterinarians to evaluate your pet’s general health and become aware of any health problems before they become serious ill.

Unlike humans, pets cannot vocalize his feelings. He cannot tell you when he is in pain, feeling sick or is feeling uncomfortable. Because of this, you must rely on regular physical examinations by your vet and at-home observations to assess your pet’s health.

It is recommended that your pet receive a wellness exam at least once a year, and then more often in their senior years. Many aspects of your pet’s health can change in a short amount of time, so it’s vital not to miss an exam!

If your pet is in his senior years, in addition to more frequent wellness exams, routine blood testing, urinalysis and other tests are also recommended. Just like people, in pets older years they need checkups more often to prevent and treat illness that comes with age. AAHA recommends that healthy senior dogs and cats receive a wellness exam and lab testing every six months.

What can you expect during your pet’s wellness exam

Your vet will request a complete history of your pet’s health. Don’t forget to mention any unusual behavior that you have noticed in your pet including coughing, diarrhea, eating more than usual, excessive drinking of water, excessive panting, scratching or urination, vomiting or weight changes. Your vet will also ask about your pet’s daily behavior, including his diet, how much water he drinks and his exercise routine.

Your vet will also check vital statistics, ears, eyes, mouth, heart and lungs, reproductive organs, skin for infections, abnormalities, allergies, tumors and disease as well as check for updated vaccinations
