How to Prevent Fleas and Ticks This Spring

We are loving this spring weather!  Are you ready to spend time outdoors with your pet?  As the weather warms, it's important to make sure that your pets are protected against fleas and ticks.  These external parasites can make your pets feel uncomfortable and can even cause illness.

Fortunately, there are ways to keep your pet healthy and parasite-free!

Prevention Tips:

• Stay Away from Heavily Wooded Areas - Keep your pets away from heavily wooded areas and tall grasses.  These areas are considered the perfect habitat for ticks.  Try to create tick-free zones in your yard by keeping your grass short and cutting back any bushes.
• Use Preventative Medicine - Preventative flea and tick medications can be applied topically or orally in a tablet or liquid form.  Our veterinarians can help you determine what the best preventative medication is for your individual pet.  You can even conveniently purchase flea and tick medication online.
• Check for Ticks - Check your pet for ticks once a day, especially if you are spending time outdoors on nice days.  If you do find a tick, grasp it with a pair of tweezers as close down to the mouth as you can reach.  Be gentle and apply pressure until the tick lets go.

Why Does Your Indoor Cat Need Parasite Prevention?

Did you know that 25% of cats with heartworm infections are strictly kept indoors?  

Parasite prevention is important - even for indoor cats!  Now that the weather is warming up, it's time to start taking steps towards preventing feline heartworm disease.  Whether your pet spends time outdoors on nice days or prefers to stay indoors, it's still important that pet owners protect their feline friends from parasites this spring.

Why is parasite prevention important?

• Cats LOVE Hunting - Cats are natural hunters.  This means that even though they spend most of their time indoors, your feline friend will jump at the opportunity to pounce on cockroaches, mice, and flies that carry roundworm eggs.
• Spring Gardening Increases Risk - 15% of commercial potting soil conttains round-worm eggs, according to The Veterinary Record.  If you plan on keeping any potted plants indoors, this could increase your cats risk of coming into contact with the parasite.
• High Populations of Roundworms - The Northeast has the highest prevalence of roundworms - higher than any other part of the country.  Even if your cat doesn't go outside, you can unknowingly bring these parasites indoors when you come home.

• Use Natural Soaps at Bath Time -Use all-natural shampoos when cleaning your pet.  Chemical-free cleaning products better for the environment and they are also gentle on your pet's skin.
• Buy Pet Toys Made from Natural or Recycled Materials - Buy sustainable toys for your furry friends.  There are many toys made from natural materials.  You can even get pet beds made with organic cotton or recycled plastic.
• Have Fun with DIY - Add organic catnip or cat grass to your spring garden this year.  This is a great way to green your home and keep your cat happy!  You can also get crafty with scrap yarn and fabrics to make your own pet toys.

National Heartworm Awareness Month

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month!  As the weather warms up this spring, it's important to take steps to protect your pets against heartworm disease.

Heartworm disease is transmitted through infected mosquitoes that then bite your pet.  Both indoor and outdoor pets are at risk of heartworm disease.

Here are a few signs to be on the lookout for this spring.

Signs of Heartworm Disease:

• Coughing
• Asthma-Like Attacks
• Periodic Vomiting
• Lack of Appetite
• Weight Loss
• Difficulty Walking
• Fainting
• Seizures

Celebrate National Beer Day Safely

Happy National Beer Day!  Will you be celebrating with your favorite drink at happy hour?  While you may love to relax with a cold drink, make sure that you keep your alcoholic beverage away from your pet! 

Keeping alcohol away from pets is important.  Here are a few of the health effects that consuming a beer can have on your pet.

Signs of Alcohol Poisoning:

• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Decreased Coordination
• Central Nervous System Depression
• Difficulty Breathing
• Tremors
• Abnormal Blood Acidity
• Coma
• Death
