Keep Your Pets Warm and Safe this Holiday Season

THE BREGMAN VETERINARY GROUP
www.BregmanVetGroup.com

The cold and snow this season can harm your pets. It is essential to keep your pet warm and safe from the frigidness of winter. ABC Action News has great tips to help your pet from falling ill.

Keep your pet indoors this winter, if you have a neighbor who keeps their pet outdoors persuade them to bring the pet in. Pets are easily susceptible to frostbite mostly on the paws, ears, and tail.

If you do keep your pet outside make sure they have proper warm shelter to keep them from getting sick. The weather can lead to hypothermia. Straw can keep a doghouse warm as well as elevating the house off the ground.

Always provide water for your outdoor pets and make sure it does not freeze. Snow is not good enough to hydrate pets. Providing extra food this season will help build body fat to keep your pet warm. Ice melting salt can harm and irritate your pet’s paws.

Some symptoms of hypothermia in dogs include excessive shaking, shallow and slow breathing, slow heart rate, tiredness and muscle stiffness. In some cases a dogs eyes can dilate and their gums can turn pale. In a serious case of hypothermia your dog could potentially fall into a coma. Immediate care is needed to save your pet from hypothermia. If the temperature is too low to restore, hypothermia will become fatal. (ABC Action News)

If you are too cold to be outside then your pet is too. If you see a pet in need and not properly taken care of this winter, be the voice for that pet. Notify the pet’s owner about the damages of the winter.

Take Your Dog to Work Day is This Friday!

 THE BREGMAN VETERINARY GROUP
www.BregmanVetGroup.com

This Friday, June 21, is the official Take Your Dog to Work Day! As exciting as this is for you to show off your four-legged friend, there are still some steps you should take in prepping for their office debut.

Pet allergies, coworkers who are afraid of dogs, and potty accidents are a few things to consider. As long as these challenges are addressed properly, this year's Take Your Dog to Work Day should run smoothly - for you, your office, and your pup!

See below for 5 challenges you should be aware of this Friday:
  1. Coworkers who are allergic to dogs: Talk to your coworkers prior to Friday. Make sure your pooch is freshly bathed and keep him out of your coworker's area should they be allergic. Then just make sure you or the janitorial staff thoroughly cleans all areas your dog visited
  2. Coworkers who are afriad of dogs: Traumatic dog experiences happen, and sometimes those people never get over their fear. If you have a coworker afraid of dogs, never leave your dog unattended and be sure to keep him away from the coworker the entire day (no matter how friendly your dog is!)
  3. Your dog doesn't like your office: Having a needy and fearful dog at work isn't good for your dog, or for your productivity. See if you can take your dog for a test run before the official day. If not, bring a favorite toy or doggie bed, a little bit of home to make him feel comfotable
  4. Potty accidents: Accidents happen, no matter how well trained your pooch may be. Be proactive and take your dog outside more often than you normally would. An accident could be quite alarming to coworkers who don't own pets
  5. Distractions: A cute dog is always a distraction, no matter the situation. Think ahead! Maybe a 3-month-old puppy isn't ready to bring to the office, but an older well trained dog is.
Are you planning to take your dog to work with you this Friday? Let us know on our Facebook page! Feel free to share your own tips on how to prep your pooch!

Top Summer Tips for Pet Safety

 THE BREGMAN VETERINARY GROUP
www.BregmanVetGroup.com

Summer is prime time for those family vacations, backyard BBQs, and being outdoors. All of which can be enjoyed with your pets, so long as you take the right precautions.

Here are some summer tips on how to make sure your pets are ready for what this season has in store:

Hot Weather:
  • Never leave a pet in a car on a hot day - cracking a window isn't going to cut it. We all know how much hotter the inside of a car can get when sitting for just 10 minutes. Pets can only withstand a higher body temperature for a very short time before suffering irreparable brain damage or even death.
  • Be safe outdoors- pets can easily get overheated. Make sure your pet stays cool outside by always providing shade and cool water.
  • Adjust your pet's exercise routine - exercise in early morning or evening hours for cooler temperatures. Keep in mind asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet's paws.
  • Watch for heat stroke - Call your vet immediately. Signs of heatstroke include bright red tongue and gums, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive panting, and a body temperature of 105-110 degrees. If this happens, get your pet out of the heat, lay him on cool shaded grass and pour cool water over him. You can also give small amounts of water or ice cubes

Water Safety:
  • Don't leave pets unsupervised around pools - not all dogs are good swimmers. Even if they know how to swim, they may not know how to get out
  • Practice safety on boats - make sure your pet wears a flotation device and is rinsed off after swimming in the ocean

Backyard Safety:
  • Don't allow your pet to partake in parties - human foods and drinks aren't always fit for pets to consume. Certain foods and drinks can be detrimental to a pets health

Traveling with your pet:
  • Pack smart - make sure all necessary supplies and food are packed for your trip. Check out hotels ahead of time to be certain they allow pets
  • Make sure your pet is health - set up an appointment with your vet before you begin your journey
  • Don't schedule air flights during peak hours - peak periods usually mean delays and stopovers with your pet in a crate for a longer period of time. Try early morning or evening flights to avoid this, bonus is it won’t be as hot either.

10 Raccoon's Tested Positive for Rabies in Staten Island!

THE BREGMAN VETERINARY GROUP
www.BregmanVetGroup.com

Attention Pet Owners, 10 raccoons tested positive for rabies in Staten Island!

Since January 2013, 10 raccoon's have tested positive in Staten Island in neighborhoods including Eltingville, Grasmere, Great Kills, New Dorp, Park Hill, Tottenville and Westerleigh. The number is on the rise, as compared to last year, when a reported 6 raccoon's tested positive in Staten Island.

Maintaining vaccination against rabies is required for all dogs and cats in NYC. Any unvaccinated dog or cat that may have been exposed to a rabid animal is required to enter into six-month isolation in an approved facility or be euthanized. If a pet is up to date with its rabies vaccine but potentially exposed to a rabid animal, a booster vaccine should be given immediately, and the owner should be instructed to confine and observe the animal for 45 days in the owner's home.
Although none of the ten rabid raccoon's have any reported contact with any humans or pets, it's still important to be aware of any rabid animals in your neighborhood.

Any healthy pet dog or cat that has been bitten or scratched a person is required to be confined and observed by the owner (in most instances) for 10 days. If the animal is not currently vaccinated against rabies, vaccination should not occur until after the completion of the 10 day observation period. Animal bites are can be reported to the DOHMH Veterinary Public Health Services (VPHS) Animal Bite Unit at 212-676-2483 during business hours; outside of business hours please call the Poison Control Center at 212-POISONS or 212-764-7667.

A couple of things that pet owners should be educated on:
  • Avoid contact with wild and stray animals
  • Make sure your dog or cat is up-to-date on its rabies vaccinations
  • Avoid leaving your pets outdoors unattended and feed them indoors
  • Avoid trying to separate animals that are fighting
  • Contact the Bregman Vet Group if your pet has been in contact with a raccoon, skunk, bat or any animal that might be rabid
If your pet is not vaccinated, please contact one of the Bregman Veterinary Group locations immediately to schedule an appointment.

The orangutans are using 10 different apps that include drawing activities, cognitive games and apps that use virtual musical instruments! “Apps for Apes” is a conservation Orangutan Outreach program which helped provide the apes with iPads.

Help Find Homes for Sandy Pets!

Superstorm Sandy created havoc on much of New York and New Jersey in late October.  This devastating storm left many homeless and forced people and pets into shelters.  Many animals were separated from their families and still are waiting to be reunited or in need of a new home.

Many residents from towns like Long Beach, Oceanside and Island Park are still without homes and don’t have a place to bring their pets home to. A shelter volunteer, Tracy Rahvers, told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs “Not only are they paying a monthly mortgage, now they have to find a place where they have to pay rent.  So, now they have that and they’re still trying to figure out how they’re going to have the means to take care of themselves and/or children and also their pet.”

The Bregman Vet group would like to help get the word out about these animals that are in need of a home! We encourage anyone interested in fostering one of these pets in need, more than 100 of them, to contact Nassau Emergency Pet Shelter at 516-272-0017 or emergencypetshelter@gmail.com.  You can also visit the Mitchell Field Gymnasium on Miller Avenue in Garden City!

Winter Exercises for your Pets!

During the winter months, it can be difficult to find motivation for you and your pet to get outside and exercise.

Typically smaller breeds with short hair require some additional cozy apparel to stay warm outdoors.  With a few simple tricks and the right apparel, you can train your pet to be much more enthusiastic about playing outdoors in the cold weather!
Try enticing your pet with off-leash exercise, to encourage more aerobic activity, which helps them stay warm.  Walking your pet in wooded areas can protect them from the wind and introduces them to rich smells, sounds and sites that may distract them from the cold weather.

When winter brings snow, it can be harsh on the paws of your dog because of de-icers that contain chemicals.  A simple solution is canine booties, also “Musher’s Secret” which is a waxy substance that you can apply to their paws for protection.  When exercising outdoors with your furry companion make sure they have access to shelter and water at all times.  You can also try some indoor activities like tug of war with your dog, which involves physical exertion that can keep them in shape.  Winter is also a great time to enroll your pet in indoor training classes.   These are a few good ways to improve the behavior and obedience of your pet in a heated facility that is comfortable for the both of you!

The Bregman Vet Group encourages you to maintain your pet’s health, even in the winter season!  Try and enjoy some exercise together, and be sure to visit your veterinarian regularly throughout the cold winter months!
